Facts about obesity

1- Weight gain causes multiple diseases: Losing 5 to 10% of body weight significantly reduces the risk of developing diseases.

2- Every extra kilogram shortens life: Comprehensive medical statistics have shown that overweight people are more susceptible to premature death from conditions like heart attack, and every extra kilogram on the scale increases these risks.

3- Weight gain makes life miserable: Weight gain can become a daily burden when even the slightest effort leads to shortness of breath, limited mobility, and excessive sweating, leading to loss of self-esteem.

4- Maintaining weight loss is possible: But it requires a comprehensive program that includes healthy eating, more exercise, and lifestyle changes to choose the right treatment methods, such as medication or surgery.

Body Mass Index (BMI) Measurement:

It is commonly agreed that the best method to use is the Body Mass Index (BMI). The equation is based on your weight and height.

BMI = Weight / (Height^2)

For example, a person who weighs 100 kg and is 1.7 meters tall would have a BMI of:

100 / (1.7 x 1.7) = 34.6

It is known that when there is a 20% increase above the ideal weight, this increase begins to pose a health risk. The American Institute for Chronic Disease has defined obesity according to the body mass index as follows:

  • Less than 18: underweight
  • 19-25: normal
  • 25-30: overweight
  • 30-35: obese
  • 35-40: severely obese
  • 40-50: morbidly obese
  • 50-60: super obese
  • Over 60: hyper obese

These classifications have important implications, as they are associated with determining the best method or process for weight loss, as well as the likelihood of complications after surgery and the likelihood of success.
